I have never seen the movie so I found it on Netflix and started watching. Right off the bat, I didn't like it. I was actually looking forward to the scene where drug store girl couldn't talk and where the cats followed Sally to school. So much was left out of the first part that I stopped watching it. Thanks for the great read!

@ WingsPaswnNMagick, I like and dislike both characters (Sally and Gillian) but to me the flaws are what makes them great characters. Alas, I am a bit too much like Sally so I guess I havee to like her more.

@ Elisabth, I find it interesting that you like the book more than the movie. I saw the movie first so when I started reading the book I kept wondering where they got the screen play from because they are so different.

Thanks ladies for answering the quesitons, hope you are enjoying the book.

1. Magnolia Street
2. Fire/smoke inhalation.
3. Speciality was Love.
4. Hardware store.
5. August
Bonus – cats were named after birds = Cardinal, Crow, Goose, Raven, Dove and Magpie.
For Fun – I like Sally better – even in the movie version I like her better. Thought Gilly was selfish and still do – I would hope I was more like Sally but honestly am a mixture of both sisters – can be very selfish when I want to be. I still like the movie but felt they left out some important things like how the children are so similar to their mother and aunt with their personalities – do like the fact that the aunts in both the movie and book encourage them to be themselves. I really like her writing style and will go on to read more of her books.

Cripes....I didn't say they were named after birds. That's what I get for not reading the question all the way. =)

@Elisabeth LOL it's funny how we sometimes skip over the little details. funny and Frustrating.

@Katrina I too can be a bit selfish, I think we all can, anyone who says otherwise is out of their gorde (or possibly a nun). But I also think that it is important to be selfish sometimes. I agree Gillian is writen in a fashion that makes her come off as singularly selfish (that is until Antonia comes into play, that girl! don't even get me started LOL)

KKAT said...

oh I completely agree about Antonia - as I have heard from my mother all my life - all that girl needs is a swift kick in the youknowwhat!

Didn't see the bonus question... is it too late to add after posting 1-5 answers? If not, their kitties names were Magpie (poor kitty tail :-/), Cardinal, Crow, Raven, Goose and Dove

1. On Magnolia St in a town in Massachusetts
2. The bungalow they were staying in for their second honeymoon burned down
3. Love
4. At the town’s hardware store
5. Every summer in August

Bonus: They were all named for birds: Cardinal, Crow, Raven, Goose, Dove, and Magpie

Just for Fun:
*I liked Sally more; Gillian got on my nerves with her self-centeredness.
*I think Sally is the one I am more like.
*I haven’t seen the movie but really want to now that I’ve read the book. I actually read the book with the picture of Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman as Sally and Gillian in my mind’s eye!
*I really enjoyed Ms. Hoffman’s writing style, and will be looking up some of her other works, especially if they have anything to do with magic or the supernatural, to read soon!

@Susan It's funny I saw the movie first and absolutely loveit. The book I read also has the actresses on the cover but no matter how hard I tried I couldn't see them when I was reading. I think it's because the book and the movie are so different.

I havn't read any of Hoffman's other books but I think I have Here on Earth somewhere around here, I'll have to go check. Let me know what you think if you read another one of hers.

Thank you all so far for taking part I am really enjoying this and I hope you are too.

Just for Fun: SALLY

I'm really not much like either, but if I had to pick it would be Sally..

I LOVED the movie. Not as crazy about the book. I read it a long time ago & hated it..LOL This time around it's not as bad, but I still like the movie better

It's the only book by her I've ever read. It's ok, but I'd have to try to find another book by her to really make a good judgement.

Mattress Ezma...I was/am anoyed with Sally's attitude but I didn't get the impression it was a "better than you" attitude, I just think she is high strung LOL

Jen, I am with you I love the movie, not so sure about the book yet. Glad you are liking it better the second time around.

Here are my answers because I finally got my book:
1. The Aunts live in Massachusetts on Magnolia St.
2. The parents died in a cabin fire on a 2nd honeymoon. :(
3. Matters of Love
4. Michael was the manager of the hardware store.
5. The Aunts were visited every summer in August.

Bonus: The cats,Magpie,dove,Crow,Raven,Cardinal and Goose, are named after birds.

Just for Fun: I'm really enjoying the book. I like the way Alice Hoffman writes. The story flows and she's very descriptive.

When I was younger I was more of a Gillian but now I'd say I"m a mellow Sally.
I'd like to see the movie version someday.
This is fun Caroline-Thankyou!

Andrea...I too must admit that I had a streak of the Gillian in me my husband says that's why he married me but now I'm all Sally (so what does that mean for my husband???) :)

1. In an old house built by their ancestor. In a small town on Magnolia St. in Massachusetts.
2. In a fire while on their second Honeymoon
3. Making/Selling Love potions/charms to the desperate women in town.
4. Michael worked in the town's Hardware Store. {Handy men are always a +}
5. Sally and the Girls would visit the aunts in the summer in August {my B-day month}

Bonus: The cats are named after birds. Crow, Raven, Goose, Dove {I know there's more, but I can't remember}

Just for Fun: I feel like Gillian is a better representation of me. Only because I can be a bit immature and irresponsible. Also I believe in falling in love/ being in love, even if it only last a few weeks. In the other hand Sally is so my sister. She has always been the mother hen looking after me.

Have not seen the movie. Not sure if I want to see it before I finish the book. This is my first Alice Hoffman book. So far I like it.

I like Alice Hoffman's writing style. It is easy to read and was able to finish the first section in one evening. I am looking forward to the next section!!! ;o)
